What is an AI SEO agency?

An AI SEO agency uses artificial intelligence across the entire SEO workflow — research, content production, technical audits, link prospecting, and AI-engine visibility tracking — rather than treating AI as a single bolt-on tool.

The good ones use AI to do work AI does better than humans: pattern recognition at scale, query expansion, SERP analysis, structural drafting, schema generation. The bad ones use AI to mass-produce thin content and get the entire site penalised by Google's helpful-content systems. The difference is operational, not technological.

We sit in the first camp. AI handles the leverage. Humans handle voice, strategy, and judgement. Our editorial pass strips every AI tell — em-dash patterns, symmetric three- bullet lists, "in today's digital landscape" openers — that flag content as machine-generated. The output reads like a senior practitioner wrote it because a senior practitioner edited it.

How to spot the real thing

Most "AI SEO agencies" are doing one of two things.
We're the third.

Pattern A

Traditional SEO

“We don't use AI”

  • Manual keyword research that takes 3 days
  • Content briefs without competitive synthesis
  • Slow technical audits, missed at-scale issues
  • Zero AI-engine visibility tracking
  • Falling behind on volume and speed
Pattern B

AI Washing

“AI-powered everything”

  • Bulk AI content with no editorial pass
  • First-pass LLM output published as articles
  • AI tells flagged by Google's helpful-content systems
  • Site-wide ranking drops within 6-12 months
  • No proprietary AI tooling — just ChatGPT subscriptions
Pattern C — Xpand Digital

AI-Native SEO

AI does the leverage. Humans do the judgement.

  • AI-driven keyword + SERP analysis at 100× speed
  • Structural drafts via AI, edited by humans for voice
  • Mention Layer tracks AI-engine visibility weekly
  • PressForge automates digital-PR for citations
  • Proprietary tooling, not someone else's reseller
Where AI plugs into our workflow

Five places AI does the work.
Three places humans still own it.

01

Keyword research and SERP analysis

AI expands seed keywords across intent, language, and SERP variants in minutes — work that used to take a senior strategist three days. We pair it with Google Ads Keyword Planner volume data and competitor SERP mapping to identify the actual opportunity, not the keyword volume mirage.

02

Competitive synthesis

AI ingests the top-10 ranking pages for any target query, extracts the patterns (depth, format, schema, internal-link density, named-entity coverage), and surfaces what's actually working. We brief content based on what's winning, not on what we assume.

03

Technical SEO audits at scale

AI processes Screaming Frog crawl data — 50,000+ URL sites — and flags cluster-level issues (orphan pages, schema gaps, internal-link bottlenecks) that manual review misses. Audits that used to take a week ship in a day with higher signal.

04

Structural content drafts

AI produces structural drafts: outline, fact aggregation, schema scaffolding, FAQ candidates. A human editor — usually Joel — rewrites the draft in founder voice with concrete examples, opinions, and specific detail AI can't fabricate. We never publish first-pass AI output.

05

AI-engine visibility tracking

Mention Layer monitors 30-50 priority keywords across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overview weekly. Citation count, citation context, sentiment, source mapping. The data feeds our content roadmap — we ship to close measured gaps, not on intuition.

What humans still own
Strategy
Where to compete, in what order, against which competitors. AI helps with the data; the call is human.
Voice
Founder tone, brand POV, opinions worth disagreeing with. AI flattens voice; we restore it on every line.
Judgement
When to pivot, when to hold, when to kill a tactic. AI runs experiments. Humans interpret what they meant.
The proof

What an AI-native operator actually delivers in market.

Technical SEO retrofit + AI-driven content velocity + entity-graph schema. Now ranks #1 for the category head term.

Service business
$600K
from dead leads in 90 days

AI database reactivation paired with site-side capture optimisation. Same buyer, different surface.

Local commerce

Common questions

What buyers actually ask before they hire an AI SEO agency.

An AI SEO agency is an SEO operator that uses artificial intelligence across the workflow — research, content production, technical audits, link prospecting, and AI-engine visibility tracking — rather than treating AI as a single bolt-on tool. The good ones use AI to do work that AI does better than humans (pattern recognition, scale, query expansion) while keeping humans on the work AI does badly (strategy, judgement, voice, brand differentiation). The bad ones use AI to mass-produce thin content and get the entire site penalised. The difference is operational, not technological.

We never publish first-pass AI output. AI drafts the structural skeleton — research synthesis, outline, fact aggregation, schema scaffolding — and a human editor (often Joel personally) rewrites it in the founder voice with concrete examples, opinions, and the kind of specific detail AI can't fabricate. Google's helpful-content systems penalise the patterns of unedited LLM output (em-dashes everywhere, 'in today's digital landscape', symmetric three-bullet lists, no specific numbers). Our editorial pass strips all of those. The output reads like a senior practitioner wrote it because a senior practitioner did.

Five places. (1) Keyword research — AI expands seed keywords across intent, language, and SERP variants in minutes instead of days. (2) SERP and competitor analysis — AI extracts patterns from the top-10 ranking pages for any query, surfacing what's actually working. (3) Technical audits — AI processes Screaming Frog crawl data and flags issues at scale. (4) Content drafting — AI produces structural drafts that humans rewrite in voice. (5) AI-engine visibility — Mention Layer (our own SaaS) tracks how AI engines mention your brand. AI does not write final copy, decide strategy, or make brand voice calls.

It will replace bad SEO agencies. The agencies disappearing in 2026 are the ones whose value proposition was 'we know how to use SEMrush and post on Medium.' AI does that work in seconds now. The agencies thriving are the ones with proprietary methodology, original-data assets, brand-level positioning, and an integrated stack (research + content + technical + GEO + measurement) that compounds over years. AI is the leverage. The leverage doesn't replace the operator; it replaces the operator who was just running tools.

Three things. First, we built our own AI tooling: Mention Layer for AI-engine visibility tracking and PressForge for digital-PR automation. Most agencies use someone else's tools and resell them; we built ours and run them across our own client base. Second, our founder Joel House wrote AI for Revenue (Barnes & Noble) and The Growth Architecture — the books are the methodology, not marketing collateral. Third, we don't separate 'SEO' and 'GEO' work into different teams or upsells. The same operator who ranks your blue links also engineers your AI citations because the disciplines are converging.

A composite scorecard: traditional SEO KPIs (organic traffic, keyword positions, conversions from organic) plus AI visibility KPIs (citation count and citation share across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overview). The traditional metrics live in GSC and GA4. The AI metrics live in Mention Layer and we report on both weekly. Most agencies track only the traditional metrics, which means they're missing roughly a third of the buyer journey now happening inside AI engines. We report the full picture.

Engagements are scoped against the work, not productised tiers. A typical engagement includes: ongoing on-site SEO + GEO retrofit, monthly content production, monthly technical audits, weekly AI visibility reports via Mention Layer, and a quarterly strategic review. Pricing reflects the size of the keyword footprint, the competitive density of the category, and the rate of content production needed. We don't publish flat tiers because the work isn't flat. We do publish ranges on request after a discovery call.

First measurable wins land in 30-60 days: structural site improvements (schema, llms.txt, FAQ markup) lift Bing rankings (which lifts ChatGPT visibility) and Google AI Overview citations quickly. The compounding wins land in 6-12 months: organic traffic from improved Google rankings + branded search lift from AI mentions + assisted conversions from buyers who heard your name in an AI answer before they converted via another channel. We benchmark expected timelines against your category density at the start of every engagement.

Hire the operator, not the pitch deck

Most AI SEO agencies are reading our book.
Hire the people who wrote it.

30-minute strategy call with Joel. We'll baseline your current AI visibility, map the three highest-leverage moves for your category, and tell you honestly whether we're the right operator for the engagement. No deck. No "we'll get back to you with a proposal."
