AI SEO for Australia
be the name AI recommends,
not your competitor.

Australian buyers are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews who to use, and getting two or three names back, not a page of links. If you are not one of those names, you are invisible. What is AI SEO in Australia?

AI SEO in Australia is the practice of optimising your business so AI answer engines, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, name and cite you when Australian buyers ask category and location questions.

It is not the same job as ranking a blue link on Google. The old game was placing your page in the top ten and hoping the searcher clicked. The new game is being one of the two or three businesses the model actually recommends inside its answer, because that is all the buyer sees. There is no page two in an AI response. You are either in the shortlist or you do not exist for that query.

Getting there means four things working together: content the models can extract cleanly, an entity they can read (schema graph, sameAs links, consistent name-address-phone across Australian directories), third-party citations from sources the models trust, and measurement of how you actually appear across each engine. Most Australian categories have almost none of this in place yet, which is exactly why the window is open. Our full guide to getting found in AI search covers the mechanics engine by engine.

The scale of the gap is measured, not guessed. The Outrigger AI Visibility Index 95,392 data points across 1,004 businesses, found 65.9% of them were effectively invisible in AI search. Australia is an early category opportunity, which makes a measured baseline more useful than assumptions about where the brand appears.

The prompts your buyers are typing

Australians ask AI the shortlist question.
Here is what the engine hands back.

Prompt 01

“best mortgage broker in Melbourne”

AI answers now: two or three named brokers, each with a one-line reason drawn from reviews, directory profiles and mentions on third-party sites: not the old ten-link list.

The stakesIf your business is not among the names, the buyer never learns you exist. There is no scroll to find you.
Prompt 02

“who should I use for solar in Brisbane”

AI pulls from Google Business Profile signals, local citation sources and any comparison content it can extract, then recommends a short set of installers by name.

The stakesLocal intent resolves on local signals. A national brand with no Brisbane citation footprint loses this query to a smaller, better-instrumented competitor.
Prompt 03

“is [your brand] any good / [brand A] vs [brand B]”

AI synthesises sentiment from reviews across platforms, forum threads and press, and returns a verdict: sometimes before the buyer ever visits your site.

The stakesYour reputation is being summarised by a model reading the open web. If you are not shaping those sources, the summary is written without you in the room.
The Australian AI SEO playbook

Six disciplines run together.
Each one is a place Australian businesses lose the answer silently.

01

Entity architecture: make your business machine-readable

AI engines need to identify the business behind the evidence they retrieve. We build the @graph schema, a sameAs network tying your site to your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and any press, and consistent name-address-phone across the Australian citation ecosystem. Clearer entity signals can reduce ambiguity, and the baseline shows whether that is one of the gaps worth addressing first.

02

Extractable content: write the way models quote

Dense marketing prose can be difficult for an engine to extract. We restructure priority pages around direct-answer paragraphs, question-form headings, FAQ blocks with FAQPage schema, and short attributable claims with real numbers. These patterns can improve source eligibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, while each engine and query is measured separately.

03

Australian citations: the local signals AI trusts

For location queries, AI leans on Google Business Profile, local directories and region-specific mentions. We build and clean your footprint across relevant Australian sources, including industry directories, local press, and review platforms, so the business is easier to identify for 'near me' and city-level queries. A smaller local operator can compete when its entity and citation signals are clearer.

04

Digital PR: structured campaign workflow

Relevant third-party mentions can add independent evidence around an entity and its claims. Xpand may use PressForge to organize the research, pitching, and follow-up for expert commentary, original data, and editorial outreach. Any placement remains subject to the story and editorial judgment, and no citation outcome is assumed.

05

The SEO foundation. AI reads what Google already indexed

AI Overviews and ChatGPT's browsing mode retrieve from indexed, well-structured pages. Traditional SEO is not replaced by AI SEO: it is the substrate AI visibility grows on. We keep the technical, content and authority foundation strong (see our national SEO across Australia), then layer the AI-specific work on top. Turning off SEO to chase AI is a mistake we talk clients out of.

06

Measurement via Outrigger: track what changes

You cannot improve what you cannot see. Outrigger, a separate joint venture Joel co-founded with Andrew, tracks 30–50 of your keywords across all five engines weekly: were you mentioned, cited with a link, from which page, in what context, with what sentiment: benchmarked against your top three Australian competitors. The output tracks citation share over time and identifies the gaps to assess next. We report against a measured baseline.

AI SEO by Australian city

National strategy, local answers.
Eight metros with their own AI-search program.

Local queries resolve on local signals. Each city program adds the metro citation work and Google Business Profile optimisation on top of the national entity and PR layer.

Why Xpand for AI SEO in Australia

We do not sell what we cannot measure.

Almost every agency selling ‘AI SEO’ or GEO in Australia has no instrumentation behind it. We use dedicated measurement and report against the baseline.

We use Outrigger: the separate AI-visibility platform Joel co-founded with Andrew

Outrigger tracks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews mention you, cite you with a link, and in what sentiment: benchmarked against your competitors, updated weekly. It is a separate joint venture Joel co-founded with Andrew. An agency measuring AI visibility with screenshots and vibes is guessing; we use dedicated software.

PressForge: digital-PR workflow

The citations that inform AI answers are earned, not bought. Xpand may use PressForge to organize research, pitching, and follow-up for expert commentary, original data, and editorial outreach. Any placement remains subject to editorial judgment.

Australian coverage, national and local, one team

We can scope AI search work across Australia. National brands may need the entity and authority layer, while local businesses may also need metro citation work in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, the Gold Coast, Adelaide, the Sunshine Coast, or Canberra. The proposal states the coverage, reporting cadence, term, and cancellation conditions before work begins.

Common questions

What Australian owners ask before starting AI SEO.

AI SEO in Australia is the practice of optimising your business so that AI answer engines, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, name and cite you when Australian buyers ask category and location questions. It is distinct from traditional Google SEO: instead of ranking a blue link on a results page, the goal is to be the business the model recommends inside its answer. That means clean, extractable content, a machine-readable entity (schema, sameAs, consistent NAP across Australian directories), strong third-party citations, and measurement of how you actually appear across each engine. For most Australian categories the field is wide open, because almost nobody is instrumenting it yet.

It is early, and that is precisely the argument for moving now. Google AI Overviews already appear across Australian queries, while ChatGPT and Perplexity increasingly intercept the research stage: 'best mortgage broker in Melbourne', 'who should I use for solar in Brisbane', and 'is [brand] any good'. The Outrigger AI Visibility Index (Q1 2026, 95,392 data points across 1,004 businesses) found 65.9% of businesses were invisible in AI search. The opportunity is to make the business entity, evidence, and citations clear before competitors do.

Most agencies selling GEO or 'AI SEO' have no way to measure it: they are guessing. We use dedicated instrumentation. Outrigger is a separate joint venture Joel co-founded with Andrew that tracks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews mention you, cite you with a link, and in what sentiment, benchmarked against your competitors. When the work calls for digital PR, Xpand may use PressForge to organize research, pitching, and follow-up. And our founder Joel House wrote AI for Revenue and The Growth Architecture (both on Barnes & Noble). We do not sell a service we cannot measure or a method we have not published.

Both. This is the national hub: the strategy, the instrumentation and the reporting run the same whether you sell nationally or in one metro. Underneath it we run city-specific AI-search programs for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, the Gold Coast, Adelaide, the Sunshine Coast and Canberra, because local queries ('near me', suburb names, state-based intent) resolve differently inside AI answers and need local citation sources and Google Business Profile signals. A national brand gets the entity and PR layer; a local business gets that plus the metro citation work. Many clients need both.

The same research and shortlist questions they used to type into Google, phrased conversationally: 'best [service] in [city]', 'who's the top-rated [trade] near me', 'is [business] reliable', 'compare [brand A] vs [brand B]', 'cheapest [product] in Australia'. The difference is the answer. Instead of ten links the buyer skims, the engine returns two or three named recommendations with a short reason for each. If your business is not one of the names, you never enter the consideration set, and unlike a low Google ranking, there is no page two to scroll to. Being named in that shortlist is the entire game.

Through Outrigger, the separate platform Joel co-founded with Andrew. We monitor 30–50 keywords in your category across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. For each query we track five things: were you mentioned, were you cited with a link, what page was the source, what was the context, and what was the sentiment. Then we benchmark that against your top three Australian competitors on the same queries. The headline output is a citation-share metric, your share of voice across AI answers in your market, tracked over time, plus the specific content and citation gaps to close next. You see whether the work is moving the number, not a vanity traffic chart.

Do both, in the right order. Traditional Google SEO still drives the majority of click-through for most Australian B2B and local categories, and it is the foundation AI visibility sits on. AI Overviews and ChatGPT's browsing mode pull from indexed, well-structured pages. Switching off SEO to chase AI would be a mistake. The right framing is layering: keep the SEO foundation, add the AI-search layer that captures the buyer journeys SEO alone no longer reaches. We run our AI SEO alongside our traditional SEO across Australia rather than as a replacement.

There is no fixed result window. The technical and entity layer, including schema graph, crawler access, FAQ markup, Bing Webmaster verification, and consistent Australian citations, is often the clearest place to start. No individual change controls whether an independent engine cites a business. When digital PR is in scope, Xpand may use PressForge to organize research, pitching, and follow-up, while coverage remains subject to editorial judgment. We establish a baseline first, then report what changes and what does not.
